why is understanding ph important for the beauty and wellness professional? Balanced pH levels are the key to the health and care of your skin, but what is it and how does it affect your body? Our professional expert Lorna Daly explains it to us!

What is pH?

pH is a measure of acidity on a scale from 0 to 14. It gives us the degree of acidity of a substance. pH 7 is neutral. Values below 7 indicate acidity and increase as the number decreases, with 0 being the most acidic value. Values above 7 indicate alkalinity and increase as the number increases, the most alkaline value is 14.

What is the pH level of the skin?

The pH level of the skin is below 5, it is slightly acidic.

What happens if the pH level changes?

If the pH increases or decreases it can alter the balance of the skin and the natural microbiome (where microorganisms are present helping to protect your skin). This could upset the balance and loss of your skin’s natural protective mechanism.

Are pH levels different depending on the area of the body?

Yeah. The pH of the intimate area is around 3.5-4.5. Like the rest of the skin, it could lose its protective mechanism if it is unbalanced. When this occurs, it could cause irritation or sensitivity.

What can I do to get the pH level balanced?

Hygiene products have their own pH, sometimes they are not compatible with our body, which is why we must use a special product that does not alter our natural pH. Use the special range of products for the intimate area, such as Feminelle. These intimate care products have been developed to optimize pH and protect the microbiome. They contain lactic acid, prebiotic infusion and natural Swedish extracts for long-lasting comfort. Plus, they are biodegradable, which is good for the environment.
